GIS Mapping for Solar Course

The GIS Mapping for Solar training course is a 12-week program to learn about how to use Geographic Information Systems mapping for solar energy projects. Increase your knowledge of GIS analysis to evaluate impacts on land use by solar energy developments, such as the impact of a large solar farm on local food production.

You will learn how to apply mapping techniques to find opportunities for solar energy generation in rural and urban areas. Gain experience working through mapping exercises to address challenges and learn participatory techniques to increase public engagement in communities.

Who this Course is for

The Green Skills Academy is committed to providing these courses to underserved and underrepresented communities, specifically Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, Newcomers, Women and Gender Diverse. Priority will be given to individuals who are part of these groups. 

People who have prior GIS knowledge and want to apply GIS techniques in energy development. Specifically, for: 

  • Individuals with basic to advanced GIS experience and an interest in applying technical skills for solar energy developments
  • GIS professionals interested in energy development and energy transition management

You must be: 

  • 18 years or older 
  • Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or have Refugee Status 

Why you should take part

You will gain 120 hours of education about GIS concepts and techniques that support solar energy development. Course components include solar energy mapping, impacts of solar farm developments, participatory mapping techniques, and rooftop solar potential.  

  • You will receive subscription access to GIS software
  • You will be ready to apply to jobs in the GIS and renewable energy sector upon course completion
  • You will receive a Certificate of Completion in GIS Mapping for Solar after finishing all course requirements

Weekly Schedule

This course is a combination of independent course work and virtual group meetings. Below is an example of the weekly time requirements, but is subject to change.

  • Week One: 3 hours of independent work.
  • Week Two: 2 hours of meeting, 5 hours of guided work.
  • Week Three: 4 hours of independent work.
  • Week Four: 2 hours of meeting, 10 hours of guided work.
  • Week Five: 1 hour of meeting, 10 hours of guided work.
  • Week Six: 10 hours of guided work.
  • Week Seven: 3 hours of independent work.
  • Week Eight: 2 hours of meeting, 15 hours of guided work.
  • Week Nine: 1 hour of meeting, 15 hours of guided work.
  • Week Ten: 3 hours of independent work.
  • Week Eleven: 2 hours of meeting, 15 hours of guided work.
  • Week Twelve: 1 hour of meeting, 15 hours of guided work.
